Congratulations to Procopio client and energy technology innovator UNIGRID on reaching a significant commercial milestone as the company begins deploying its sodium-ion residential battery systems in Europe and prepares for deliveries in the United States later this year.
As recently reported by the San Diego Business Journal, UNIGRID’s Na+Casa residential energy storage systems are designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -40°F to 140°F while offering an expected lifespan comparable to the 25-year life of many solar panel installations. The company says its proprietary sodium-ion technology provides an alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries with greater temperature resilience and a more domestic supply chain built around widely available sodium resources.
“Electricity prices (in Europe) are going through the roof,” UNIGRID co-founder and CEO Darren Tan told the Business Journal, “so they need batteries that do well in the heat.”
Procopio Partner Xiaofan “Frank” Yang, PhD, has provided patent prosecution and counseling to UNIGRID for several years. As an emerging energy technology company, UNIGRID relies on patents to protect the proprietary innovations behind its sodium-ion battery platform as it expands into new markets, attracts investment, and scales commercial production.
The article also notes that demand from European customers has already exhausted the company’s initial inventory, with UNIGRID now preparing to expand production. The San Diego-based company is developing a pilot manufacturing facility in Sorrento Mesa while evaluating additional domestic manufacturing capacity to support future growth. Beyond residential applications, UNIGRID sees significant opportunities for its battery technology in data centers, where rapid power fluctuations require energy storage systems capable of frequent, short-duration charge and discharge cycles.
